Snack Suggestions for Performing Singers
When you are performing, you still need to eat, hydrate, have energy, and be able to concentrate. Here are a few suggestions for healthy snacks that have long-term protein, as well as short-term carbohydrates for energy. These are great for everyday life, too, but they’re especially good for singers as these comply with the MEOW diet (see the Blog post on “How to Keep Your Singing Voice “Singing” from may 22, 2016) for performance days.
* Sealed bags or plastic containers of raw nuts and dried fruit, such as raw almonds with raisins and dried cranberries
* Sealed bags or containers of raw nuts, accompanied by honey sticks
* Roast Chickpeas with one Tablespoon of Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper, and Cayenne for about 25 minutes at 300 degrees and then, let them cool. Once cool, store in a sealed bags or container, and couple with dried fruit, such as dried Granny Smith Apples
* Create your own “Protein Balls” by combining 1 1/2 tablespoons of nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, etc.); 3 tablespoons oats; 1/2 tablespoon honey; 3/4 tablespoon dried fruit (dried cranberries; dried apricots, chopped;.raisins; freeze-dried strawberries, etc.); optional ingredients could include coconut, chopped nut pieces, and Mix together and roll into small balls. Refrigerate until hardened, and store in sealed plastic bags or containers.
* Roast Pumpkin Seeds with 1/2 tablespoon of Olive Oil, 1 teaspoon of Curry powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Combine together and bake mixture for approximately 20 minutes in a 300 degree oven. An alternate recipe combines the Pumpkin Seeds with Olive Oil, salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon of Oregano. Once again, dried fruit makes for a good companion. However, another suggestion for an accompaniment here might be Air-Popped Popcorn with Butter Buds and a sprinkling a Parmesan cheese or Cayenne Pepper.
Enjoy these treats and send me any other suggestions you know of. The snack should have one component of time-released, long-term protein, and one component of short-term, energy-boosting Carbohydrates. Thanks for reading!
